Moving a Restaurant, Hotel or Senior Living Facility

Most commercial moves happen in an empty building. Hospitality moves usually do not. The restaurant is serving, the hotel has guests, the senior living community has residents who live there, and none of that stops because a relocation is scheduled.

That single fact reshapes the whole job.

The work happens in the gaps

A restaurant has a window between close and delivery. A hotel has a low-occupancy night midweek. A senior living facility has a period in the day when common areas are quiet. Those windows are when the move happens, which means overnight and early-morning work is normal rather than a premium exception.

It also means the job is phased. Nothing about a hospitality move is a single day with a full crew.

What each one cares about most

Restaurants are about the kitchen. Commercial equipment is heavy, awkward, often gas or water connected, and needs a qualified disconnect and reconnect rather than a crew unplugging it. The dining room is the easy part; the line is the job.

Hotels are usually FF&E replacement rather than relocation, floor by floor, while guests are in the building. The constraints are the service elevator, the corridor routes, and noise. Nobody in room 412 cares that the refurbishment is on schedule.

Senior living carries the most care. Residents are moving their own homes, often downsizing, sometimes without family present. The move is emotional as well as logistical, and the pace has to allow for that. Corridors have to stay clear for mobility aids and for emergency access at all times, without exception.

The things that get missed

• Fire exits and emergency egress blocked by staged furniture. In an occupied building this is a serious issue, not an inconvenience.
• Elevator capacity assumed rather than checked, in a building where residents and guests also need it.
• Kitchen equipment scheduled to move before the disconnect is booked.
• No plan for the furniture coming out, which in a refurbishment is the same volume going in.
• Crews arriving without a briefing on how to interact with residents.

How we approach it

Survey during operating hours, so the plan is built against the building as it actually behaves rather than as a floor plan. Agree routes and staging areas with the operator before anything moves. Phase the work so no area is out of use longer than agreed, and keep egress clear at every stage.
