Ask any mover which room takes the longest and you'll get the same answer. The kitchen has more individual items than any other room in the house, and a higher percentage of them are breakable, oddly shaped, or both.
Budget a full day. Start a week before everything else.
Purge first — it's genuinely faster
Spices, opened dry goods, half-used oils, the appliance you used twice in 2021. Anything opened and perishable isn't worth the box it travels in. Local food banks in Durham and Wake County take unopened non-perishables, and that's a better outcome than paying to move canned soup across town.
Order of operations
- Rarely-used first: serving platters, the good china, the stand mixer, holiday dishes, small appliances you don't use weekly.
- Then pantry and dry goods: small boxes only, seal anything that could open in transit inside a zip bag.
- Then daily dishes and glassware, leaving out a few place settings.
- Last morning: the remaining plates, the coffee maker, and whatever you used for breakfast.
Dishes go on edge
This is the technique that separates a professional pack from an amateur one. Plates travel vertically, on their edges, like records in a crate — not stacked flat. A stack of flat plates concentrates all the impact of a bump on the bottom plate. On edge, each plate has structural strength along the direction of force. Wrap each one in paper, then band them in groups of three or four, then stand them up in a dish pack with two inches of crumpled paper underneath.
Glassware and stemware
Each glass gets wrapped individually, and hollow items get lightly stuffed with paper. Stemware goes in a cell divider — the cardboard grid inserts made for exactly this — and only in the top layer of a box. Never put a stemware carton in the bottom of anything.
Knives, and the safety items
Blades get wrapped in cardboard sleeves and taped, then labeled clearly. The same applies to the food processor blade and the mandolin. Someone is unpacking that box, possibly quickly, possibly in poor light.
Small appliances
Original box if you kept it. If not: cord wrapped and taped to the body, removable parts wrapped separately and packed in the same carton, glass carafes and blender jars treated as stemware. Empty the water reservoir on the coffee maker — a full one leaks into the box.
The open-first box
Pack one box, label it in large letters on all four sides, and load it last so it comes off first. In it: a knife, a pot, a pan, a can opener, dish soap, a sponge, paper towels, salt and pepper, coffee and whatever makes it, and enough plates, bowls, cups, and silverware for everyone in the house for one day.
You will be tired, it will be late, and you'll want to eat something. That box is the difference between a decent first night and takeout eaten standing up.
Or don't do any of it
The kitchen is the room where professional packing most clearly earns its cost. Two packers will do a full kitchen in a few hours with materials designed for it. Plenty of our customers pack their own bedrooms and closets and hand us the kitchen and the china cabinet.
