Duke, UNC, and NC State Move-Out: A Survival Guide

The Triangle has more than 60,000 university students inside a twenty-mile radius, and most of them move out of housing during the same two weeks in May. Duke, UNC, NC State, NCCU, Meredith, and Shaw are all compressed into that window.

That's the whole problem, and it's also the whole solution: book against the calendar, not against your schedule.

Book six to eight weeks out

By mid-April, every reputable mover in Durham and Raleigh is largely booked for the first two weeks of May. If you're calling in the last week of April for a May 10 move, you're choosing from whoever's left. Get on the calendar in March.

Move on the shoulder days

The Saturday and Sunday of finals week are the worst possible days — loading docks are jammed, elevators have lines, and street parking near campus disappears. A Tuesday or Wednesday move, even one day off the peak, is faster and often cheaper, and you'll actually get the freight elevator.

Know your building's rules before move day

This is the step students skip, and it costs real money in waiting time.

• Duke: West Campus loading access is limited and time-boxed during move-out. Check with your residential coordinator for the loading window.
• UNC: Franklin Street and the Chapel Hill campus core have tight parking restrictions. Some residence halls require a reserved unloading slot.
• NC State: Hillsborough Street and the Centennial Campus buildings have separate rules. Freight elevators frequently require advance reservation.
• Off-campus apartments: Many Triangle complexes require certificates of insurance from your mover, and some require them 48–72 hours in advance. Ask your leasing office now, not on move day.

A licensed, insured mover can produce a COI on request. If a mover can't, that's your answer about the mover.

Summer storage, honestly

The two options are storing it yourself and having it stored for you. A self-storage unit is cheaper per month, but you're paying for two moves — into the unit and out of it — plus a truck twice. For a single dorm room over one summer, door-to-door storage where the mover picks up in May and delivers in August is usually the cheaper total number once you count the truck rentals and your own time.

Either way: nothing perishable, nothing that can't take a warm month, and take an inventory with photos before it goes in.

The night-before checklist

• Everything boxed and closed. Movers can't load an open laundry basket.
• Fridge emptied and defrosted — a mini fridge that wasn't defrosted leaks into everything under it.
• Laptop, passport, medication, keys, and chargers in a bag you carry yourself.
• Room key and any dorm checkout paperwork handled separately from the move.

Coming back in August

Move-in has the same compression problem in reverse. If you're storing over the summer, lock in your August delivery date at the same time you book the May pickup. It costs nothing to schedule it early and it removes the entire problem.
