North Carolina gives you 60 days to report an address change for your driver's license and your vehicle registration. Those are two separate updates, and doing one does not do the other. Start there, then work through the rest of the list below.
How do I change my address on my NC driver's license?
License address changes can be done online through the NCDMV portal. You will need your license number and the details NCDMV uses to verify you, so have the card in front of you rather than working from memory. If the online path rejects you, the change can be made in person at a driver license office.
One thing worth doing in the right order: update your vehicle insurance first. Your rate is tied to your garaging address, and having insurance and DMV agree from the start saves a correction later.
Do I have to update my vehicle registration separately?
Yes. Registration is handled separately from the license, so changing one leaves the other pointing at your old address. Do both inside the 60-day window. If you own more than one vehicle, each registration is its own record.
What about USPS forwarding?
Filing with USPS takes five minutes and covers maybe half of what actually needs updating. Forwarding is temporary, generally twelve months for first-class mail, and a lot of important mail does not forward at all. It buys you time; it does not do the work.
Two weeks before
- USPS change of address. File at usps.com or at a post office. There's a small identity-verification fee online; be aware that several lookalike sites charge far more for the same free service. Use the official one.
- Utilities at both addresses. Duke Energy, your water and sewer provider (which in the Triangle is city-specific, and Durham, Raleigh, Cary, and Chapel Hill are all separate), natural gas, internet, and trash. Schedule the old address to stop the day after you move out and the new one to start the day before you move in. Never same-day.
- Internet install at the new address. Book it now. This is the appointment that has a three-week lead time and derails everyone who waits.
The legal deadlines
- NC DMV, 60 days. Driver's license and vehicle registration, both of them, as covered above.
- Voter registration. Moving within the same county can often be updated at the polls, but moving to a different county requires re-registering, and there's a deadline before each election. If you moved from Durham County to Wake County, you have to re-register, and this catches a lot of Triangle movers.
- Vehicle insurance. Your rate is tied to your garaging address. Update it before the DMV change so the two match.
Financial and government
- Banks and credit unions, every credit card, brokerage and retirement accounts
- IRS (Form 8822) and the NC Department of Revenue
- Social Security, Medicare, or VA benefits if applicable
- Employer payroll and HR, which affects your W-2
Insurance and medical
- Health, dental, vision, life, and homeowner's or renter's insurance
- Primary care, dentist, specialists, veterinarian
- Pharmacy: transfer prescriptions before you run out, not after
The ones people forget
- Amazon and every retailer with a saved default address (the default is how you accidentally ship to the old house)
- Subscription boxes and meal kits
- Your child's school district and any after-school program
- Gym membership, HOA, storage unit
- Pet microchip registry, genuinely important and almost universally forgotten
- Anyone who mails you a paper statement you actually read
After you move
Keep a running list on the fridge for the first month. Every piece of mail that arrives addressed to you at the old address is a company that still has the wrong record. Update it that day and cross it off. In about four weeks the list stops growing, and that's how you know you're done.
