Filing with USPS takes five minutes and covers maybe half of what actually needs updating. Forwarding is temporary — generally twelve months for first-class mail — and a lot of important mail doesn't forward at all. Work through this list instead.

After you move

Keep a running list on the fridge for the first month. Every piece of mail that arrives addressed to you at the old address is a company that still has the wrong record. Update it that day and cross it off. In about four weeks the list stops growing, and that's how you know you're done.
